Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica Treatment

You or someone you know may have experienced sciatica, a form of peripheral neuropathy affecting the sciatic nerve in the pelvic region. The common complaint is pain that radiates from the inferior buttock region, especially with sitting and standing, the pain is often sharp, with possible numbness and tingling sensation. Muscle weakness of the low back and leg, muscle spasms are also commonly described. The pain eventually goes away, but may return several months later.

The sciatic nerve gives sensation to the lower back, buttock region and the back of the leg, and sole of the foot. This nerve also controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg. What causes sciatic nerve pain is usually nerve impingement due to bone spurs, spinal malposition, and disc herniation.

If sciatica isn't treated, muscles become weak, reflexes diminished, and progression of pain and numbness and tingling become more severe affecting everyday activities and overall health.

Traditional back surgery is often the course of treatment, although a more conservative and often effective approach has been with chiropractic care.

In my clinical experience with sciatica, a thorough neurological and orthopedic examination is necessary to determine where there is a malposition of the spine or other physical stress or condition which may be causing this nerve dysfunction. Many people with sciatica have recovered from their pain and discomfort with chiropractic care.

You may be a candidate for chiropractic care and if you are interested in a free consultation for your sciatica please call my office at 530-846-6262.
